8 Tips on Being a Successful Home Care Attendant

1. Communicate with your patient. You want to make sure you understand their needs and that they understand you are there to help them.

2. Keep your patient’s living areas clean, neat and clutter free!

3. Wash your hands often and use gloves as needed. It is not only for the sake of good hygiene but also good for preventing germs from spreading from you to your patients and to your families.

4. Remember you are not to administer any type of medications to your patient but you do need to remind them at the right time, assist with opening bottles, bring liquids for swallowing, clean up and dispose sharps properly.

5. Communicate with your patient’s families about their needs and expectations as you are caring for someone they love. Be sure that you do so in compliance with HIPPA and protect PHI at all times as you are bound by law to respect your patient’s privacy!

6. Be prepared in case of an emergency. Make sure you have all the required numbers you need to call in case your patient or you have an emergency situation.

7. Always be on time as your patient is counting on you. If you are sick, be sure to call in and inform your agencies coordinator about your absence and they will make the necessary arrangement for a replacement. The goal is to give as much advance notice as possible, to minimize any disruption of service to your patient. You never want to put your patient at risk. Your health and theirs is most important.

8. If you ever have questions, concerns, or you are unsure of what to do in a situation, contact the agency as we are always here to help make Home Care a successful experience for you and your patient.

When someone you know is writing you a professional reference letter, they need to include the following:

1- Job Title ex. (RN, Social Worker, Police Officer, Manager, etc.)
2- Company Name and Address.
3- Phone Number
4- Speak to your good character and must be signed.

What is a Personal Care Aide?
The Personal Care Aide is prepared to assist clients and families with personal care and home management. The Personal Care Aide provides services to patients whose medical conditions are stable. The Personal Care Aide works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.

The Personal Care Aide qualifications will conform to NYCRR Title X 700.2
Some responsibilities include:

Assist with care of the hair including shampooing and shaving.

What is a Home Health Aide?

The Home Health Aide is trained to provide home management, personal care and health related tasks to patients and families experiencing recent episodic or chronic health care problems. The Home Health Aide works under the supervision of an RN or LPN.

What is the difference between a Home Health Aide and a Personal Care Aide?

The main differences are the amount of training that is required, the tasks they are able to perform and the condition of the patient they are servicing

Personal Care Aide is only trained based on the Homecare Curriculum a curriculum set by the Department of Health, while the Home Health Aide is trained based on the Homecare curriculum and the Health Related Tasks set by the Department of Health.

The Home Health Aide is trained on Health Related Tasks and deemed competent to performing various tasks, to list a few (performing simple measurements and tests(temperature, pulse, blood pressure, etc), assisting with preparing complex modified diets, assisting with the use of prescribed medical equipment) which the PCA cannot perform.

The condition of the patient that a PCA is servicing needs to be stable where as the patient an HHA will service is chronic in nature.

How long is your HHA/PCA training?

PCA training is currently an 8 day program. It runs from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm each day for the 8 days. We currently do not offer evening classes or weekend classes..

HHA training is currently an 15 day program. It runs Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm each day for 15 days. We currently do not offer evening classes or weekend classes for this course.

What are the requirements to enroll in the training?

To enroll you just have to provide us with a valid ID that proves your working status here in the USA, a social security card, and one professional reference that is typed and signed. If you are not sure if you have these requirements please feel free to ask the recruiter for details. Upon receiving these documents and a completed application the person will then be signed up for an interview for training.

Do you offer job placement?

Yes! Every student that successfully completes one of our training programs (PCATP, HHATP) and meets all the agency requirements is offered to be assigned to a case.

Do you offer your employees benefits?

Yes! We offer health insurance, dental plan, accident and cancer indemnities, disability income protector and life insurance after 3 months of employment and vacation pay after a year.

Do you offer bonuses?

Yes! We have an Aide of the Month bonus of $100 (if chosen by our coordination staff) and Aide of the Year bonus of $200 (also chosen by our coordination staff) and often run various referral bonuses.

2 Professional References: MUST BE TYPED AND SIGNED

1) May be from a previous employer. (This includes private employment) It MUST state 1) dates of employment, 2) title, 3) duties, and 4) speak to your good character. OR may be from a school (High school, training school, college, etc) OR may be a professional reference. Professional meaning from a Pastor, Priest, Doctor, Nurse, Case Worker, Social Worker, Principle, Teacher, Case Manager, etc. It MUST state 1) how they know you on a professional level, 2) how long they have known you, and 3) speak to your good character. ¿Que es un Personal Care Aide/Home Attendant/PCA? (Asistente de cuidado personal)

Te prepara para asistir a clientes y familia con cuidado personal y mantenimiento del hogar. PCA prove servicios a pasientes con condisiones medicas que estan estable PCA trabaja bajo la supervision directa de una enfermera (RN o LPN)

Las cualificaciones de PCA son conforme a NYCRR titulo X 700.2

¿Que es Home Health Aide (HHA)?

HHA es un entrenamiento que te capacita para el mantenimiento en el hogar, cuidado personal y de salud a pasientes y familias padeciendo de impedimentos cronicos con respect de salud. HHA trabaja bajo la supervicion de una enfermera (RN o LPN)

La cualificaciones de HHA son conforme a NYCRR titulo X 700.2

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre HHA y PCA?

La diferencia es la cantidad de entrnamiento que es requerida y la clase de trajabo que pueden hacer, y el servicio de la condicion del paciente.

PCA esta solo entrenado base el curriculo del cuidado en el hogar. Un curriculo actualizado bajo el departamento de salud, Y HHA esta enrenado bajo el curriculo del cuidado en el hogar y cuidado relative por el departamento de salud.

Una HHA se entrena en Health Related Tasks se cualifican ser competentes en sus asignaturas, por ejemplo tomar medidas medicas como tomar presion, tomar el pulso, tomar temperatura. Asisten a prepar dieta modificada con el uso de equipo medico recetado, los cuales un PCA no puede hacer.

La condicion de un pasiente que requiere el servicio de PCA tiene que ser estable. Y para HHA el pasiente tiene que tener condiciones cronicas.

¿Cuanto tiempo requiere el entrenamiento de HHA/PCA?

El entrenamiento del PCA es por 8 dias. Funciona de lunes al viernes de 9 a 5pm diario por 8 días. No ofrecemos clases por la tarde o clases del fin de semana.

El entrnamiento del HHA es de 15 dias. Funciona de lunes al viernes de 9 a 5pm diario por 15 dias. No ofrecemos clases por la tarde o clases del fin de semana.

¿Cuales son los requisites para encribirse en el entrenamiento?

Para inscribirse solo necesitas proveernos una identificacion valida que nos puebe que puede trbaja en los Estados Unidos. Una tarjeta de seguro social, una carta de referencia macanografiada y firmada. Si no esta segura puede preguntar a la recrutadora. para informacion. Despues que tenga todos los documentos necesarios seran puestos en una lista para recivir una entrevista para el entrenamiento.

¡Sí! Cada estudiante que completa uno de nuestros entrenamiento y cumple todos los requisitos de la agencia se ofrece ser asignado a un caso.

My name is Jeannie Pabon. I am a Home Health Aide who started out as a Personal Care Aide about a year ago today. I would love to tell you about my experiences working with First Care. I really enjoy working with the staff and with the patients day in and day out. First Care has taught me a lot of valuable lessons and had helped me to become the Home Health Aide that I am today. It’s in my nature to want to help others, especially those that cannot help themselves. When I work my shift and leave at the end of the day I feel wonderful and accomplished because I was able to help and make a difference in someone’s life.
